PORTRAIT: HUGUET

SQUARE, FANTASTIC, GOOD
Huguet is a small family business that celebrated its 90th anniversary last year. The tile manufacturer based in Campos is now run by the third generation and has made a name for itself beyond the island in popular design destinations such as London, Milan and New York.

From Mallorca to the world's metropolises - the handmade tiles are used in buildings by architectural greats such as David Chipperfield and Herzog De Meuron - to name just a few. The renewed emphasis on traditional handicrafts benefits the Mallorcan manufacturer.

In addition to their wall and floor tiles, washbasins and sinks made of terrazzo and even furniture made of concrete are very popular in the design world. Although it is an ancient technique, the everyday objects are more contemporary than ever. Whether plain or patterned, Mediterranean or modern - at Huguet everyone who appreciates attention to detail and tradition will find what they are looking for.
KNUMOX VISITING HUGUET
Huguet clearly stands for passion instead of high tech, for craftsmanship and hydraulics. At the KNUMOX Mallorca Event 2023, participants were able to see for themselves how the porcelain stoneware is made: a visit to the company was one of the special experiences of the trip. After a tour of the showroom, which is directly adjacent to the workshop, every single step of the production process could be followed. Casting and pressing took place between cement vats and unplastered walls on which the metal stencils hang. Since the cement products do not require firing, direct CO2 emissions are avoided thanks to the hydraulics - which is definitely beneficial for the environment. The coloring is also done with sustainable aspects in mind. The dyes are completely natural or obtained from natural processes. You can now choose from 36 soft tones. Whether ornamental motifs that exude Mediterranean flair, graphic shapes or tiles made from a color cast - each of the tiles tells its own story. It is not uncommon for leftovers such as glass, wood or marble splinters to be added - it is ultimately these variations that make the difference to industrial production clear and thus make the objects unique.
